The United States provided 53 percent of Oxy's total production in 2009. In addition, Oxy has a greater percentage of its proved reserves in U.S. assets – 64 percent – than all major oil and gas companies.
Oxy is the No. 1 oil producer in the Permian Basin of southwest Texas and southeast New Mexico, with a production rate of approximately 201,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day in 2009. Oxy is the No. 1 natural gas producer and second-largest oil producer in California, where net daily production averaged 135,000 BOE in 2009.
In 2009, Oxy announced it made a significant discovery of oil and gas in Kern Country, California – believed to be the state’s largest oil and gas discovery in 35 years. Oxy owns a more than 1-million-acre position in a large concentration of gas reserves, production interests and royalty interests in Kansas and Oklahoma. Oxy also has over 935,000 acres in western Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.
Oxy continually strives to strengthen its North America position by increasing production through strategic acquisitions and additional development in each of the company's key U.S. business areas.
